North Carolina officials are reminding people to keep their cars locked after a break-in by an unlikely suspect.

Blue Ridge Public Safety officers said they were called to a home in Hilltop, a neighborhood in Sapphire, North Carolina, to deal with a vehicle that needed to be unlocked.

When officers arrived, they found more than just a locked Ford. Inside the vehicle was a trapped bear, public safety said in a July 23 Facebook post.

The department shared photos of the havoc the bear wreaked on the vehicle’s interior.

“Needless to say Bear -1 Vehicle -0,” the post reads. “This is a reminder to keep your vehicle doors locked even if you will be out of it for only a few minutes.”

Black bears, the only bear species in North Carolina, are common in the state’s coastal and mountain regions and uncommon in the Piedmont region, according to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

Sapphire is about 60 miles southwest of Asheville.
